Our story

The KukuBima story

About friendship, homesickness and a little sachet of powder

Once upon a sachet

The scene: a supermarket in Groningen. Two Indonesian students, freshly moved, walk past the same shelf for the third time.

So where are they?

Where are what?

The sachets. Back home they're in every little shop, every petrol station, on every street corner.

Not here, apparently.

They were right. Products you can buy everywhere in Indonesia, the ones they used every day, were nowhere to be found in the Netherlands. That had to change. And because you shouldn't do something like that with just two people, two Groningers joined in.

No age-old formula

We don't have a family crest, a grandpa who once started out in a shed, or generations of tradition to brag about. We're four friends who brought KukuBima to Groningen and deliver it ourselves. That's our whole story, and honestly, we think that's plenty.

Our mission is big: putting Indonesian products on the map in the Netherlands. But we're starting small, in the shape of a sachet.

So what does “KukuBima” mean?

The sachet itself does have a story. KukuBima has been around since 2004 and is made by PT Sido Muncul, one of the largest and oldest makers of traditional herbal products in Indonesia.

And the name? Kuku Bima literally means “the claw of Bima”, a legendary hero from Javanese mythology. A giant of a warrior who never got tired. We think that's a fitting name for something that drags you through exam week.

From Groningen, with love

We started out as four guys with a living room full of boxes. One day we want to be the reason you can find a piece of Indonesia in every Dutch city. Until then, we'll just be at your door ourselves, with a sachet of energy and a big smile.
